Project Spotlight: Vanderbilt University’s McGugin Center
One of the more memorable projects in our portfolio took place right here in Nashville at Vanderbilt University’s McGugin Center, the state-of-the-art athletic facility that houses the celebrated Commodores baseball program, including the team that brought home a College World Series national championship.
Our work at the McGugin Center focused on the clubhouse, where we installed a complete acoustical ceiling system using Armstrong ceiling tile, one of the most trusted names in commercial ceiling products. The project was completed in approximately two weeks, and the results speak for themselves: a clean, professional environment that befits championship-caliber athletes.

Landmark Commercial Scale: The MTSU Rhea Atrium Science Building
If the McGugin Center project demonstrated our ability to deliver quality in a focused environment, the Middle Tennessee State University Rhea Atrium project showcased what we can do for large landmark entities.
Twenty-five years in the making, MTSU’s new $147 million science building is one of the most ambitious academic construction projects in the region’s history. The facility houses the biology and chemistry departments, six lecture halls, 37 teaching labs, 13 research labs, and two open labs serving MTSU graduate students. And at over 257,000 square feet, it needed a ceiling installation team that could operate at scale without sacrificing an inch of quality.
Ozburn-Hessey was trusted with more than 200,000 square feet of that space. Our team, which was comprised of six (sometimes up to eight) full-time workers, two project managers, and a dedicated on-site superintendent. We worked for approximately a year to complete the installation, including two distinct ceiling systems:
- Acoustical tile ceilings: Installed across the majority of the building’s interior spaces, providing sound control, clean aesthetics, and compatibility with the building’s extensive mechanical systems.
- Wood grille panel ceilings: 6,000 square feet of Rulon International Panel Grille ceiling tiles were installed in select areas, adding a warm, architectural beauty that elevates the building’s interior design.
The wood grille panels deserve special mention. Often, when clients think of hardwood, they picture flooring, but at Ozburn-Hessey, we know that wood’s aesthetics work just as beautifully overhead. Rulon International’s Panel Grille tiles can be configured to evoke both modern and traditional sensibilities, making them a flexible and striking choice for any upscale commercial or institutional environment. The MTSU installation stands as one of our largest and most complex projects to date, and we are proud of every square foot.
Custom Architectural Ceilings: The Country Music Hall of Fame
Nashville is a city with a rich cultural identity, and few institutions embody that identity more powerfully than the Country Music Hall of Fame. When the Hall of Fame needed a ceiling installation for its sixth-floor Event Hall (a space that hosts weddings, receptions, and live performances), they needed an installer with the skill, professionalism, and collaborative spirit to handle something truly extraordinary.
They called Ozburn-Hessey.
The project centered on a 4,000-square-foot custom metal mesh ceiling installation designed specifically for the venue by the Linder Group, a specialty architecture and design firm based in Germany. Working in close collaboration with Nashville’s own Tuck Hinton Architects, the design team created a dramatic ‘floating cloud’ ceiling. This is a suspended field of custom metal mesh panels, not attached to any walls or columns, creating an open, airy, and visually stunning focal point for the event space.
The technical demands of this installation were significant. The mesh panels had to incorporate open spacing to accommodate the venue’s existing sprinkler and speaker systems, all within city code requirements. Lighting integration presented additional challenges that required ongoing collaboration between Linder Group and Tuck Hinton Architects throughout the installation process.
The result is a ceiling that guests at the Country Music Hall of Fame have admired and will continue to admire for years to come. It is a perfect example of what’s possible when an experienced installation team brings discipline, craftsmanship, and genuine enthusiasm to a project that demands all three.
