How to Keep Your Office Carpet Cleaner, Longer

In the business world, the longer you can use something before you need to replace it, the better it is for the company. In a city like Nashville, where businesses come and go, every little thing counts and could mean the difference between continuing and shutting down. With this in mind, here are some ways to extend the life of your carpet so that you do not need to replace it. After all, replacement is a costly procedure in terms of labor and the potential work stoppage it requires.

How to Keep Office Carpet Clean

With Carpeting, Always Look to the Water

The biggest fear of any office with commercial carpeting is always going to be water. Unlike hardwood flooring or laminate flooring, commercial carpeting really has no defense against water spills and moisture. There are some semi-waterproof carpeting options, but these were designed with homes in mind and are a good deal more expensive, negating their benefits in the business world.

The main thing is speed. The faster you can get to a spill or leak, the less time there will be for the water to be absorbed into the carpet fabric. If you do not, the moisture can mold. At best, the room with the offending carpet will smell musty; at worst, you’ll have bacteria growing which can lead to respiratory problems and more.

Maintain the Carpet Regularly

You are probably already doing this, but something as simple as vacuuming the carpet on a regular basis will do wonders for extending its life. When dust and dirt particles get trapped in the carpet, they can lead to additional heath and respiratory issues. Additionally, they will scrape against the fibers of the carpeting, leading to a dull, lifeless floor.

Be sure to use the correct settings on the vacuum since using the wrong one could lead to snagging, scratching, and other damage. If the carpet is looking a little soiled, you might want to look into something a little bit more intense, such as steam cleaning. Be sure to focus on areas with a lot of foot traffic, since these areas that will have the most dirt.

Be Careful About Furniture Placement

Another way to extend the life of your carpet is by periodically rearranging the furniture. When heavy desks or chairs sit in the same place for an extended period of time, the carpet gets worn down. Plus, this creates regular walking paths, which leave a more focused trail of wear and tear. Moving things around not only provides a fresh feel in the office, it will more evenly spread out the wear and tear of the flooring, allowing the whole floor to share the load. Be careful when moving heavy furniture, however, because it won’t do your floor any good if you end up snagging a fiber and causing a run in the carpets’ surface.

Everyone wants to get the most out of the products they buy. By regularly cleaning your carpets, keeping an eye out for water and moisture, and by switching things around every so often, you will insure that your commercial carpeting is around for a good long while.
