Intro to carpets: Three things to keep in mind

Selecting a new carpet can be very daunting, especially if this is the first time you have ever done something like it. Most people wouldn’t be able to tell you the difference between a broad-looped nylon carpet with Stain Guard and a polyester plush carpet top. Which is fine; not everyone can be expected to know everything about every topic, especially when it comes to your home. There are several things to keep in mind when selecting the new carpeting, including style, material and color, which is why we at Ozburn-Hessey are here to help.

Style is everything

The first thing you should decide is what kind of carpet you want. When you do your research about the different styles, keep in mind that style usually refers to the size of the tufts and other factors that are related to the size of the actual fibers themselves. If you don’t want to worry about your pet’s’ claws getting snagged in the carpet or your children tripping on the fibers, you probably don’t want to choose a carpet where the fibers are looped. That being said, those kinds of carpets do tend to last longer. Other styles to consider include plushed, which is sheared so everything is even but tends to show footprints and vacuum cleaner marks, and sculptured, which is a combination of the two styles, and hides dirt very well.

When making this decision you need to decide what is important to you: how well your carpet hides and traps dirt, how long it will hold up against the wear and tear of day-to-day use, and how easy it is to walk across.

Material World

What your carpet is made out of is almost as important as the style, since the two really work hand-in-hand. Whereas the style of your carpet is going to affect a variety of things, which material you use is primarily going to impact the longevity of your carpet, as well as how soft it is. Right now, Nylon is the gold standard when it comes to materials, since it is pretty strong and and it is pretty resistant to damage. Additionally, it is available in a lot of different colors. Really, it is the most versatile material.

Of course Nylon isn’t the softest material which is why some might consider something like Polyester. When it’s new, Polyester feels amazing and is usually a good deal cheaper, but it doesn’t last as long. We at Ozburn-Hessey offer a wide range of products from a number of different vendors, so you certainly won’t have any issues finding options.

Show Some Color

Now this is the fun part. Choosing the color of your carpet, or if you want a pattern, is part of what makes your home unique from the others, and is one of the most noticeable ways of putting your stamp on the world of interior design. Darker carpets are going to help hide stains, while lighter shades will do wonders with the perception of lighting in your room.

As you can see, there are a lot of things to keep in mind when selecting your new carpeting, which is why it’s important to do some research and talk to someone about your options. We at Ozburn-Hessey are always available to help out in any way possible. Contact us today for more information!
