Differences Between Commercial and Residential Carpet

Many of our customers ask us about the difference between commercial and residential carpet. It’s a fair question, and it’s one that can make a big impact depending on the use of the space. You don’t want to install a residential carpet in an office, and you probably don’t want to install commercial carpet in your living room, either. You want to install a carpet that looks great but that also functions specifically for the space in order to ensure you’re getting the most out of it. A soft, comfortable carpet for your home is best and a durable, tougher floor is ideal for your office space.

There are many differences between these two types of carpet, and it’s important to understand these differences when getting new flooring. This will make your floor installation process easier and will also prove valuable later on. Thankfully, our team can help guide you in deciding what types of floors work best for your space and ensure that the carpet looks fantastic too.

Commercial Carpet
This carpet isn’t as soft as its residential counterpart, but it’s made to withstand traffic, stains and other factors involving wear and tear. Commercial carpet typically has firm fibers. The backing system can ultimately determine how strong the carpet holds and keeps the carpet from bubbling up or tearing. Using a high-density performance backing is a sure way to keep your carpet working properly in high-traffic areas. In addition, commercial carpet is low-maintenance; a great feature for those who don’t have a lot of time to spend cleaning floors. Generally speaking, commercial carpet also has shorter fibers and requires a larger investment on the front end. But keep in mind, due to its large lifespan, it is worth the initial cost.

Residential Carpet
It’s probably safe to assume that you’ve had carpet in your home at some point in your life. You probably know that the carpet is nice and soft and it’s meant for comfort, sound control and beauty. There are many choices when it comes to residential carpet available to people at all kinds of price points. Often times, residential carpet can be less expensive than commercial, but it really depends on the type and square footage of the space involved in the floor installation.

While both types of carpet are intended for different uses, they have similar features as well. Both types of floors can absorb sound effectively. Both can be stain resistant (though you might want to check with us on the type you choose just to be sure). Carpet is a versatile and inexpensive choice for your flooring, and the installation process is easy with the help of our crew.
